The ideal bed for Shelter would be the Commercial Grade. We are hoping for mostly medium and large beds to accommodate large dogs and entire litters of puppies.

Poly Resin Bed with Commercial Duty 40 oz Fabric

This bed utilizes the "chew proof" frame design of the poly resin beds with 40 oz. solid vinyl fabric to make the most durable bed that Kuranda manufactures.

The heavy duty vinyl has shown to hold up better than any fabric tested in animal shelters, boarding kennels, and in training facilities.

The 40 oz. vinyl is a smooth, non-porous, easy-to-clean material similar to what is used on truck tarps and gym mats.

Keep Your Pets Safe from those Tricks and Treats!

Halloween can be a traumatic and even dangerous time for your pet. The Animal Shelter Inc. wants to offer some common-sense tips to protect your pet on Halloween:

bullet Don't leave your pet out in the yard on Halloween. There are plenty of stories
of vicious pranksters who have teased, injured, stolen, and even killed pets on this
night.

bullet Trick-or-treat candies are not for pets. Chocolate is poisonous to a lot of
animals, and tin foil and cellophane candy wrappers can be hazardous if swallowed.

bullet Be careful of pets around a lit pumpkin. Pets may knock it over and cause a
fire. Curious kittens especially run the risk of getting burned.

bullet Don't dress the dog in costume unless you know he loves it. Otherwise, it
puts a lot of stress on the animal. If you do dress up your dog, make sure the
costume isn't constricting, annoying or unsafe. Be careful not to obstruct their
vision, even the sweetest dogs can get snappy when they can't see what's going
on around them.

bullet Keep pets in a separate room during trick-or-treat hours. Too many strangers in strange garb can be very scary for a dog. This will also prevent your cat or dog from darting out through an open door.

While this can be a fun time for people and pets alike, remember that your pets are depending on you to keep them safe from the more dangerous goblins and ghouls that this holiday brings.

USE EXTREME CAUTION WITH CHOCOLATE and HALLOWEEN!

Chocolate made for human consumption can cause death in dogs. Dogs are sensitive to a class of chemicals called methylxanthines. Caffeine and theobtomine are members of that family. Dogs simply cannot metabolize and excrete methylxanthines as efficiently as humans. The half life of those compounds in the human body is in the order of 2 to 3 hours, in the dog it is more like 18 hours.

In a dog, the compounds are taken up by the liver and transmitted via the bile into the intestine. They are then converted back into the original methylxanthines for another circuit through the animal. This repeats itself a number of times and instead of getting rid of the substances the dog keeps repoisoning itself.

There are many formulations of chocolate with varying amounts of caffeine and theobromine. The lethal dose of sweet milk chocolate for a dog is 2 oz per kill gram of bodyweight. For a 5 kilogram dog this would be about 280 grams. A lethal dose of milk chocolate for a 25 kilogram would be about 1.4 kilograms.

Dark chocolate is at least 10 times as lethal.

Symptoms include vomiting, hyperactivity, restlessness, hypersensitivity to touch ( a dog will jump when touched very rapid heartbeat and rapid breathing rate. A loss of control of leg muscles, muscle tremor seizures, general weakness, coma and finally death follow.
