Why Pets Don't Make Good Christmas Presents
The Best Way To Bring Home a New Family Member This Time of Year

With their wet noses, tiny paws and willingness to love, pets spring to many people’s mind as a great Christmas present. The kids beg mom and dad for a new puppy or kitten—pleading and promising how much they want one. But as living things, animals deserve lots of consideration and planning before coming into their new forever home. If you’re thinking this may be the time of year to add a furry new family member, here are some things to consider:

  • The holidays are a hectic time. Families are away for weeks on end, and traveling or boarding disrupts the routine of an animal just as they are trying to get settled in. Adopting in early November, December or AFTER the first of the year means plenty of time to transition in peace.

  • Pets shouldn’t be a surprise for anyone. Pet ownership is a major, lifetime commitment. Even if you think you know exactly what kind of pet your loved one wants, he or she may feel differently once they get to the shelter and interact with the animals. Making a good match between pet and owner takes time and patience, and people need to be allowed to choose for themselves.

  • Pet ownership requires full-family participation. Our shelter REQUIRES the whole family to pick out a pet is best, because children may turn out to be afraid of large animals, too rough for small animals, prefer cats to dogs even though you didn't know it, etc.

  • Picking a new family member is a 15+ year commitment. Each animal reacts differently to men, women, children, and other animals. It is not fair for a pet to be given as a gift. Imagine bringing home a new pet for someone (including your kids) only to find out it hisses, growls, runs away, hides, or is simply NOT a suitable match for the new family members??? Then what?
Bringing home a shelter pet is great—when the entire family has made a decision! But be sure to plan ahead to make the transition as smooth as possible for both the pet and your family.

Our Shelter recommends some of the following explanations:

  • Explain to the kids that Santa knows how good they’ve been through the year; therefore, they are being rewarded BEFORE or AFTER the holiday—Santa doesn’t like to put animals in his sleigh as it is way too dangerous and they might fall out!

  • Purchase all the supplies (crate, toys, miscellaneous pet care items), and wrapping them up to be under the tree for the kids! This way the entire family gets to experience the joy of selecting the right pet for the family.

  • Purchase a gift certificate for the family so they can make their OWN personal choice. Picking a pet is almost like picking a spouse, everyone has their own preferences!

How to Help Our Pets and Yours at Christmas

Here are some tips the Shelter wanted to share with you to ensure that our pets and yours have a bright, winter season.
  • Prepare your pets for cold weather by creating space indoors for them to spend their days and nights. Indoors is ALWAYS best for pets, but especially during the cold of winter. Be sure, however, that you don’t put space heaters or other fire hazards within reach of your pet.

  • Help our Shelter prepare for the winter months by donating blankets and towels to keep the furry friends warm.

  • Give yourself plenty of time to interview and book pet sitters or boarding for the holiday weeks.

  • Donate new stuffed animals and toys to the shelter to keep them happy.

  • Volunteer at the Shelter—or foster a dog, cat, kittens, or mommy-cat with babies!

  • Consider donating supplies to the Shelter, such as:
    • Bleach and liquid laundry detergent
    • CAT LITTER
    • Dog and cat toys
    • RAWHIDE chews
    • Paper towels and paper plates
