A Heartwarming Video and Tearful Reunion

In the wee hours of Sunday morning, October 19th, myself and two of our Shelter staff members crawled out of bed in the freezing cold to catch a 6 a.m. flight out of Boston. We weren't complaining, however, because this quick overnight trip was a surprise! After 9 LONG YEARS we were FINALLY about to surprise Sandy Wyatt and her staff at the Southside SPCA in rural Meherrin, Virginia at their Grand Opening and Open House of their newly opened Shelter.

Sandy Wyatt is a hero and I'm honored to know and work with her. To say that Sandy is an angel or a saint is a true understatement. She is 64 years old with a cute southern drawl. She is the Executive Director at the Southside SPCA, which is a volunteer position. We have wanted to meet Sandy for many, many years. We begged and pleaded with her for years to attend one of our Rescuers Reunions that many of you have to. However,  Sandy WILL NOT leave her Shelter or the pets she cares for.

Over the past 9+ years, Sandy and I have had the honor and pleasure to have rescued, rehabilitated and re-homed over 15,000 dogs and puppies!!!

The Surprise!

Lady with adopted dogHalf asleep we drove almost two hours to The Southside SPCA's Open House where only TWO of their volunteers knew we were coming. Francee blindfolded Sandy and everyone gathered around. I don't think I've cried that hard in years! We both sobbed like babies. It was extremely emotional.

Though Southside has come a LONG way over the years there is still SO much they need and on an on-going basis. Sandy is way too proud to ask for anything but I'm not! So we're hoping our supporters, and especially our Virginia adopters, will take a few minutes to watch the video we created from our trip and understand just how LUCKY your dogs are to have found you all. We hope you will all hug them extra tight today because if it weren't for Sandy in Virginia, that amazing family member you stop to pet, allow on the bed or couch, smile at them even when your mad they chewed your favorite shoe, wouldn't be here without the dedication of Sandy Wyatt.

We are hoping our supporters will consider helping US help them. Southside is always in desperate need of supplies and donations. The Donate A Bed program was created to enable pet lovers to help bring a bit of the same comfort to these deserving shelter animals that yours enjoy at home. The beds are sent directly our Shelter in the donor’s name at a discount of about 30%.

Donate Old Cell Phones The Animal Shelter Inc. of Sterling, Massachusetts is a non-profit organization and no-kill shelter. The Shelter provides humane sheltering and care for stray, unwanted, abused and neglected animals. The staff is dedicated to finding good homes for adoptable pets and we continue to promote responsible pet ownership to improve the quality of life for the animals and people in our community.

The Shelter is supported entirely by donations from private individuals and through mandatory surrender and adoption fees. The Animal Shelter, Inc. does not receive support from the United Way or from federal, state, or local governments.

In June 2004, the Shelter started collecting old cell phones in an effort to raise money for the Shelter programs. Please drop off or mail your old cell phones to us as a donation. Not only will it help the environment, but also our programs!

 
Donate Clothing Not only do we want to help those in need with FOUR legs, but we also want to help those with TWO legs. You can donate old clothes, linens, and or bedding at our Shelter. The second week of December, we will have a large donation bin at the top of our driveway where our community can donate items. Our Shelter will receive a percentage of money based on the weight of donations and we will be able to help others in need!

Donation Bin is run by Planet Aid, a non-profit organization dedicated to improving the lives of people at home and in developing countries. Their objectives include development, relief aid, and protecting the environment. They are a registered 501 c3 organization that works with clothes collection and recycling, partnership in development projects abroad, and local environmental education/fundraising. Planet Aid currently has more than 10,000 collection boxes in the USA.

Most people have extra clothing which they could donate. These clothes are stored in closets and attics and are eventually thrown in the trash and dumped into landfills. Planet Aid tackles this problem right in your community by recycling and reusing the clothes. They collect the used clothing, keep it out of the landfills and thus help towns and municipalities save money and resources. The clothes are recycled by being sold outside the USA to raise funds for development and aid projects such as schools, health programs or HIV/AIDS prevention in Africa, Asia, and Central America. Local projects are also funded this way by your clothing donations.

Purchase Pampered Chef Products During the month of December, the Shelter will be having a Pampered Chef fundraiser with up to 20% of the sales to be donated to the Shelter. You can shop online at www.pamperedchef.biz/karendurrance, click the shop on line box, choose option 1, enter Sterling as the host so the shelter will get the credit and start shopping.

You can also send an email to kmdurrance@hotmail.com with what you would like to order and Karen will get back to you with a total. Orders of $60 or more receive a FREE Decorator Bottle Set (a $12 value). Mini catalogs will be available at the Shelter.

Orders can be directly shipped to you or shipped to Karen with a central location to be determined for delivery.
